Q&A with Jeff Hatton, bamboo rod builder and historian

Rod maker Jeff Hatton says the worst thing rod builders have done in the last hundred years was adding cork to rod grips, and plenty of of other interesting stuff about rod building, fishing history and more in this Q&A with Rob Russell.

Winter Steelhead: Take your mark, set,…

Rob 1

Since the blog is located in Track Town USA, it is only fitting we begin the winter steelhead season with the sound of the starter’s gun. With the recent rains and a projected soaker (inches of rain!) for this Saturday, anglers should be ready for the formal start of our beloved winter steelhead season. There are confirmed reports of some catches (photo above) of metal heads being caught on the NF Alsea, Siletz and Northern coastal streams.

Yucatan Special Marabou Tarpon Fly Tying Video

Yucatan Special Tarpon Fly

The combination of yellow and orange has long been a favorite of Tarpon guides around the world. This Marabou Tarpon pattern has a study hook, great movement and it’s light dressing allows for relatively easy pick up and cast. We love this pattern in “dirty water” lagoons when you need a fly with excellent visibility. Continue reading

UV Ice Dub Blue Winged Olive Nymph Fly Tying Video

UV Ice Dub Beatis Nymph

Barrett demonstrates how to tie a simple but effective Blue Winged Olive nymph. Using UV Ice Dub as the thorax, the fly is given “hot spot” for the fish to key into. Use this pattern all Winter and Spring on the Metolius, McKenzie and Middle Fork of the Willamette. Fish the BWO nymph in tandem with a heavier fly to get in down near the bottom. Continue reading

Ice Dub Pheasant Tail Nymph Fly Tying Video

Ice Dub Pheasant Tail

The Pheasant Tail Nymph is one of the most effective fly patterns in the world. It’s slender body and thorax represent a great variety of Mayfly nymphs. In this fly tying video we have added a new color of Ice Dub to this old stand by pattern. Have these in your box this winter in sizes #16-20 to imitate beatis and other developing Mayfly nymphs. Tie them in #12 and #14 for our annual March Brown emergence. Continue reading

Rob’s fly fishing book and DVD picks for the holidays

When I was a kid, my family presented me with a new hardbound flyfishing book every Christmas. Those books became the foundation of my flyfishing universe, and I still cherish every one of those books today. I don’t think there’s a better gift for a young angler than a good flyfishing book, even in the modern age of electronic media.

Lower Mckenzie: Between the Storms

After reviewing Lower Mckenzie river levels before the last rain/snow storm it appeared the river was continuing to drop to a decent fishing level. The only bad deal, the water and air temperature were dropping as fast!

Bead Head UV Yarn Egg Pattern Fly Tying Video

This Winter Steelhead egg pattern can be used alone in shallow water, or dropped off a heavier egg pattern like a Lowly Glowly or a UV Yarn Steelhead Egg. Numerous color combinations can be effective, one could change the bead, or change the UV Steelhead Yarn. Dead drift this pattern for best success on Winter Steelhead.

Jumpstart the winter steelhead season on the Olympic Peninsula

Last weekend, I met my friend Julian on the Olympic Peninsula to jumpstart the winter steelhead season. Cold clear weather, dropping rivers, and lots of fish. We fished switch rods with indicator lines for two days, and even caught a few salmon and dollies in the mix. Photo spread below:

UV Yarn Steelhead Egg Pattern

Winter Steelhead season is here. Early fish have been reported in the Alsea, Umpqua, Siletz and many other rivers. In this short video Barrett demonstrates how to tie an alternative to the Lowly Glowly (one of our most productive egg patterns). The UV Yarn Steelhead Egg is really fast to tie and doesn’t involve shaping McFlyfoam or Egg Yarn. Instead clumps of Steelhead Stalkers UV Egg Yarn and UV Ice dub are employed to make a simple, heavy egg fly.–CD
