Barrett demonstrates how to tie a simple but effective Blue Winged Olive nymph. Using UV Ice Dub as the thorax, the fly is given “hot spot” for the fish to key into. The Pheasant Tail Nymph is one of the most effective fly patterns in the world. It’s slender body and thorax represent a great variety of Mayfly nymphs. When I was a kid, my family presented me with a new hardbound flyfishing book every Christmas. Those books became the foundation of my flyfishing universe, and I still cherish every one of those books today. I don’t think there’s a better gift for a young angler than a good flyfishing book, even in the modern age of electronic media.
After reviewing Lower Mckenzie river levels before the last rain/snow storm it appeared the river was continuing to drop to a decent fishing level. The only bad deal, the water and air temperature were dropping as fast!
This Winter Steelhead egg pattern can be used alone in shallow water, or dropped off a heavier egg pattern like a Lowly Glowly or a UV Yarn Steelhead Egg. Numerous color combinations can be effective, one could change the bead, or change the UV Steelhead Yarn. Dead drift this pattern for best success on Winter Steelhead.
Last weekend, I met my friend Julian on the Olympic Peninsula to jumpstart the winter steelhead season. Cold clear weather, dropping rivers, and lots of fish. We fished switch rods with indicator lines for two days, and even caught a few salmon and dollies in the mix. Photo spread below:

With major storms coming and the prospects of major rain, Lou and a member of the Technical Mens Council, (old dogs who have fished together for decades) Kirk, headed out for the lower Mckenzie this past week. The action was about the same as the last trip a few weeks ago. This trip produced a fine 18 incher, 17 and a 15. A couple of freshwater bonefish provided some additional interest. The possie bugger, mega prince, and prince nymph produced once again. The Sage 99 5 weight, Rio indicator line, indicator leader and Winston 9′ 6″, 6 weight were the tools of the day.
