Too cold for winter steelheading?

It seemed like we were the only boat on the river yesterday. Icy winds blew right down the collars of our coats. Rob tried to stay warm rowing. Ethan taped hand-warmers inside his gloves. I’d just returned from three weeks in Ohio, and had gotten used to sub-freezing temps. But maybe the fish had not?

Oregon Winter steelhead

No, the fish were fine. First steelhead of 2011! Be careful on the roads. It’s going to be a great year.

Good Dogs. Gained 3 pounds eating popcorn and watching bad movies while you were fishing . Tied a few flies too. Maybe the fat will help keep me warm on the river. Good going gentlemen! JN

Was out on the Clackamas Sunday in the cold as well with beautiful ice formations on the side of the river. However, no fish for me 🙁 That first winter steel continues to elude me.

  4. Glad to see you had some luck! I practically froze trying to wade Lake Creek with no success. Oh well, that’s winter.
