This Marabou Tarpon pattern has a study hook, great movement and it’s light dressing allows for relatively easy pick up and cast. Barrett demonstrates how to tie a simple but effective Blue Winged Olive nymph. Using UV Ice Dub as the thorax, the fly is given “hot spot” for the fish to key into. Use this pattern all Winter and Spring on the Metolius, McKenzie and Middle Fork of the Willamette. Fish the BWO nymph in tandem with a heavier fly to get in down near the bottom. Continue reading
The Pheasant Tail Nymph is one of the most effective fly patterns in the world. It’s slender body and thorax represent a great variety of Mayfly nymphs. When I was a kid, my family presented me with a new hardbound flyfishing book every Christmas. Those books became the foundation of my flyfishing universe, and I still cherish every one of those books today. I don’t think there’s a better gift for a young angler than a good flyfishing book, even in the modern age of electronic media.
After reviewing Lower Mckenzie river levels before the last rain/snow storm it appeared the river was continuing to drop to a decent fishing level. The only bad deal, the water and air temperature were dropping as fast!
This Winter Steelhead egg pattern can be used alone in shallow water, or dropped off a heavier egg pattern like a Lowly Glowly or a UV Yarn Steelhead Egg. Numerous color combinations can be effective, one could change the bead, or change the UV Steelhead Yarn. Dead drift this pattern for best success on Winter Steelhead.
Last weekend, I met my friend Julian on the Olympic Peninsula to jumpstart the winter steelhead season. Cold clear weather, dropping rivers, and lots of fish. We fished switch rods with indicator lines for two days, and even caught a few salmon and dollies in the mix. Photo spread below:
Winter Steelhead season is here. Early fish have been reported in the Alsea, Umpqua, Siletz and many other rivers. In this short video Barrett demonstrates how to tie an alternative to the Lowly Glowly (one of our most productive egg patterns). The UV Yarn Steelhead Egg is really fast to tie and doesn’t involve shaping McFlyfoam or Egg Yarn. Instead clumps of Steelhead Stalkers UV Egg Yarn and UV Ice dub are employed to make a simple, heavy egg fly.–CD
