Jigged Grape Ape: Tying Tutorial

In this video, Simon ties a great versatile dropper that can be ran below buoyant dry flies across the country. He sought out to develop an attractor style pattern that can mimic a wide range of aquatic foods, while also being flashy enough to capture a trouts attention. The flashiness aspect of this fly is part of what makes it successful, it can move a fish from its lie to come feed. Purple is a color that many people are superstitious of. Many say it is the last color on the spectrum that a trout can see, therefore it pops more. Regardless of the true reason behind the purple superstition, many of us have had fantastic days fishing purple flies. Green is another color that often fishes very well subsurface. It screams caddis pupae or larva and trout feed heavily on them in many areas. This color combo is one that Simon has had a lot of luck with in the past and often pairs together. For more shallow fisheries consider sizing the bead down to 1/8 or 3mm. This fly also uses a great new thread from Fulling Mill which comes out in September.
