Barrett, Tye and myself left Eugene at 4am this morning and headed down to the North Umpqua. We’d had some good reports of steelhead coming to the skated dry fly. Matt Sigmeund had a fish come to the surface the prior evening, and clouds were possible for today.
The report goes like this:
A couple of possible bumps, could have been bottom, could have been trout, maybe steelhead
One lost pair of Polarized Smith Optics, ouch
One case of poison oak
Three inadvertant swims with waders on
10 hours of fishless casts.
Great day out on the water with the guys-CD

I was married at Steamboat 16 years ago August 1. My wife and I spent two days there last week celebrating our anniversary. In two days of bright sun, I also enjoyed hours of fishless casts. No poison oak, no swimming with waders, no lost Smiths. Good news, Chris. The big box at 29th and Willamette has some discontinued Smith models on sale for $40.

I spent the last two weeks of July fishing the Umpqua and have never seen the fishing slow. We hooked a few fish but with the emphasis on “few”. The ODFW numbers look good, twice as many fish as last year but im guessing those big #’s are hatchery fish, with only a smattering of wild fish over the dam. Looking down from Mott bridge never saw more than two fish in bridge pool, most days it was barren of fish. Not a good sign, who knows maybe the fish are late, or maybe the wild run is going out of existence. The geniuses who pushed the hatchery fish out of the fly water not looking so smart now. Time to start planting fish maybe?

No hatchery fish in fly water! This would open up a can of worms. To be more specific it would probably result in a “death rattle” for the fly water.

I have some good friends in Myrtle Creek near Roseburg OR, a couple, who want to convert to fly fishing. Is there a good shop down there that would sell them the gear and show them how to use it? Just some basics until I can get down there from here on the Skagit. Thanks
