Fall Chinook Report

What a fall it is this year. Steelhead still biting well in the Willamette valley, Louver crushing big trout on the Mac, and salmon fishing in full swing on the coast.

This last weekend I went fishing for three days.(my wife calls this a “vacation”) We had been hearing mixed reports, and even the good reports didn’t seem so great. But, we decided to go anyway. The first day was sunny and beautiful when we arrived for a short afternoon float. Fish were rolling around us in numbers that made you want to cast again. But no hook ups. The next morning we hit the other ocean going river, and were pleasantly surprised to find one of the few days where the fishing was really happening.

Day three was not as good as the previous day, but a few fish were hooked. Stripping clousers, comets, and various baitfish patterns were definitely doing the trick. When the tide was up, we were using Rio Type 3 shooting heads and Intermediate heads as the tide receeded. A 10 wt rod is a good choice for these large, strong beasts. Quality setups are available at the shop and fishing is only going to get better.
