The Mayfly Project has started a new project in Eugene and we’re actively recruiting fly anglers who would like to serve as mentors.
The Mayfly Project is a 501 (C)(3) that uses fly fishing as a way to support and encourage children in foster care. Kids learn the basics of fly fishing, spend time outdoors, build confidence, and- most importantly- develop relationships with consistent, positive adults.
These are kids who have often experienced more than their share of instability. Time on the river- with patient instruction, a few laughs, and the quiet rhythm of casting- can give them something positive and steady to remember.
You don’t need to be an expert fly fisher to be a great mentor.
We’re looking for kind, reliable adults who enjoy being outdoors, have some knowledge of fly fishing, and genuinely want to invest their time in kids who can benefit from having another good person in their corner.
Mentors go through an application process, reference and background checks, an interview, and training specific to The Mayfly Project. That training includes trauma-informed care and resources designed to help mentors create an environment where kids feel safe, supported, and free to have fun.
I’ve had the opportunity to mentor with The Mayfly Project since 2021 (Denver & Bend) and I’m excited to build something here in the Eugene/Springfield area. Oregon has an incredible fly-fishing community, and I believe we have the people here to create a really special program for local youth.
