This southern Oregon adventure is the stuff of winter steelheading dreams. Two anglers will join Executive Director Mark Sherwood on a February trip into the Wild and Scenic Rogue River Canyon to fish for wild winter steelhead. Most often this iconic canyon is seen during the summer months when it’s a fun but crowded place. In the winter solitude returns to Rogue and so do some incredible wild winter steelhead.
With the help of a professional guiding service, we’ll depart in a jet boat near Agness, OR, and spend the day climbing upriver over rapids and fishing some of the most beautiful swing water imaginable. The Rogue Canyon in winter is a place of emerald green water, towering trees, and quiet beauty. As the evening shade returns to the canyon we’ll close out the first day by fishing Champagne and Half Moon Bar riffles, just downstream of the famous Blossom Bar Rapid.
That night we’ll be staying in the Wild & Scenic Rogue River Canyon at the crowned jewel of its network of historic lodges – Half Moon Bar Lodge. The lodge is only accessible by trail or boat and is surrounded by wilderness. After a long day on the river, the beautifully appointed cabins, each with wood stoves and comfortable beds, will be a comforting sight. After dropping our bags, we’ll gather in the main lodge for a delicious dinner as a fire roars in the river rock fireplace. Stories will be told, delicious beverages will be served – it’s going to be a memorable night.
The next morning, after a hearty breakfast at the lodge, we’ll load back into the jet boat and fish our way downstream. Of course, on day two you’ll know the way and we’ll make sure you get a chance to fish your favorite run one more time before heading home.
This is not a trip to be missed – a once-in-a-lifetime experience for two lucky anglers!
