Ultra violet fly tying materials catch fish, Q&A with author Reed Curry

For about the past year, a few of us at the shop have been experimenting with UV fly tying materials. UV dubbing and UV Chewee skin have been a big hit for trout on the Mckenzie and Willamette Systems, and I’ve been working UV Krystal Flash and UV Polar Chenille into my salmon and steelhead flies, and it’s definitely given me more confidence in the patterns, especially in low-light conditions.

Recently, Marcos from Hareline Dubbin turned us onto a book by Reed Curry, The New Scientific Angling: Trout and Ultraviolet Vision that really will boggle your mind. We did a Q&A with Reed, posted below.

OSU Study: Wild rainbow trout critical to the health of wild steelhead

From Oregon State University: Genetic research is showing that healthy steelhead runs in Pacific Northwest streams can depend heavily on the productivity of their stay-at-home counterparts, rainbow trout.

Deschutes River Fly Fishing

Steelhead and rainbow trout look different, grow differently, and one heads off to sea while the other never leaves home. But the life histories and reproductive health of wild trout and steelhead are tightly linked and interdependent, more so than has been appreciated, a new Oregon State University study concludes.

Ground Hog Day 2011: McKenzie fishing fine

Ground Hog Day 2011 006

Lou took Kirk, of the Technical Men’s Conference (old dogs who have fished together for decades) down the Lower Mckenzie on Ground Hog Day. The river had dropped to a decent level, the sun was out, and a cool breeze brought some success. The standard patterns for 2010 carried over to work in 2011. Yes, the Possie Bugger, Mega Prince and bombing the bottom brought Kirk some fine early Mckenzie redsides. The window of opportunity during the day was a only a few hours. The measured water temperature was 41.5 degrees. With the river levels dropping and the weather remaining calm, it may not be a bad time to check out the lower Mckenzie.

James’s first winter steelhead

From our pal James: I stopped into the shop on Thurs planning to hit the Alsea early Friday. Lou set me up with some egg patterns and I told him I’d let you guys know how it went. After 5 hours fishing, this fish (pic attached) slammed my rig while I was nymphing a few miles down from the hatchery. Cleared the water about 6 times. To say we surprised each other would be an understatement. After 5 years of buying harvest tags it feels good to fill it out… this hatchery fish is in the fridge now!

Rooster saddle feathers inundate the Caddis Fly

Feathers party!

Hey folks, we just received a huge inventory of absolutely fantastic rooster saddle patches from Whiting Farms. A big proportion of these rooster saddles will be used for making feather jewelry, hair feather extensions, feather hair braids, and such. We have amazing dyed saddles that contain long narrow feathers dyed pink, blue, purple, turquoise, and red. We have some Euro rooster saddle feathers on full patches. We have rooster half-saddles from Whiting Farms. The natural and dyed colors of these rooster saddles are too numerous to note, but we probably have it if anyone does.

The evolving expansion of the fashion world use of rooster saddle feathers has followed after years of cornering the market for the best ostrich and peacock feathers. Deal with it folks, we fly tyers are a dot on the international consumer market for feathers. The days of easy access to dyed blue grizzly saddles, dyed purple grizzly saddles, and dyed anything grizzly saddles could be over for several years.

North umpqua steelehad

Jane Holloway caught this fish on the North Umpqua. Jane is so courteous she let husband Tom and son Clay fish through the camp water first. She then followed with one of Clay’s Intruders and stuck the fish above. Nice Work Jane.

Water conditions are ideal on most of Oregon’s Winter Steelhead Rivers. We’ve had some awfully nice afternoons of late. If you have the chance, get out and enjoy.
