Muskies on the fly: Report from the Great Lakes

From Captain Nate: I took the boat on a 90-mile trip from Cleveland to Detroit this weekend to chase muskies… Sorry for the grin and grabs, but we got some monsters on flies! I’m working through some of the pics, but didn’t get all I wanted. On a side note we couldn’t keep the smallmouth off the muskie flies and there were tons of Lamprey…something I have never seen before. I think they thought the big streamers were the parasitic eel and wanted to take some revenge…

Nice tan, but those sure look like spinning rods in the holsters. If you were here, you’d look white as pancake batter, and the coho fishery isn’t here. Hope all is well in central America.

  2. Capt. Nate says:

It’s spray tan! Sorry to hear that Dave and I continue to miss the big blue … as for the spinning rods… well the skies would use them as tooth pics so they tend to be there for break time(or “guests”)! 10 and 11wts… clouser line… and icelandic sheephair flies… also I’m using some tricks I learned from the ling cod… if you ever find yourself in Detroit or Cleveland the first round is on me!

Nate, it is nice to see you are still messing with those escoscids. The muskie is still one of the greatest challenges in fly fishing. What does the sheephair fly look like? How deep were those muskies holding? Hope you can get back out here sometime. Maybe we can try those Washington fish again. Best, Goyo.

  4. Capt Ken says:

Nate, i knew it was a spray on tan all along… LOL… those musky and smallies are crank calling me… tell’em to cut it out for a few days so i can get some sleep! HAHAHA
