Here is a series of photos from a guided fly fishing trip last weekend on the upper McKenzie River, Paradise Campground to Finn Rock. Wild redside rainbow trout were all over the place (plus some “trophy” whitefish) in the early morning, but the bite tapered off in the afternoon. We fished the standard hopper dropper, […]

Small Hatch, Good Bite on the Mid-Mckenzie
July 14th, 2008 · No Comments
Sunday evening I opted to take it easy and fish the Mckenzie on foot rather than by boat. The fishing was good pretty good, I caught north of twenty fish in about three hours. Unfortunately, I didn’t get the big redside that I was after. The first fish was a feisty wild fish that ate […]

Despite recent heat lower Mckenzie is fishing fair
July 12th, 2008 · No Comments
On Friday evening I met up with Matt and Mark for a quick post work float from Deerhorn to Hendricks Bridge. Granted, I’d prefer to fish higher in the watershed but short on time we stayed low and caught a mix of natives and planters–the first fish was a pretty 12″ native. Fish ate #12 Possie […]

Mckenzie and Willamette drainages lower, offer best access so far this year
July 7th, 2008 · No Comments
Both the Mckenzie and the Willamette Rivers, and tributaries dropped huge amounts this past week. If you are used to walking in on the Middle Fork or the Mckenzie access is as good as it has been all year. In addition Salt Creek, Salmon Creek, and the North Fork of the Middle Fork are all in fine shape. […]

Last weekend we drifted from Olallie to McKenzie Bridge on the Upper McKenzie River. The water was high, running around 1600 cfs and water temperatures were still under 50 degrees by midday. Chris and guide George Recker ran the class IV rapid Fish Ladder twice to scout it out for 2008. The high water made […]

Upper Mckenzie continues to drop and improve

Sunday evening we got out for a couple of hours down from Paradise Boat ramp on the upper Mckenzie. Fishing was active, both with nymphs and dries. Earlier in the week I had put in at Frissel Bridge even higher up in the river. My thermometer read 44.2 at 9am. Yesterday at 3:45pm the water […]

Water temperatures are nearing 53 degrees by late afternoon on the upper Mckenzie River. We are seeing larger Brown Caddis, Green Drakes, Green Mckenzie Caddis, Golden Stones, Little Yellow Stones and Pale Morning Duns. When fishing above the dam look for fishing on the surface to be best in the later afternoon 2-8pm. CD

Local fishing heats up
June 15th, 2008 · 3 Comments
This past week fishing on the lower Mckenzie and Middle Fork of the Willamette improved greatly. The high water this spring has the fish in better shape than I can remember. Hatches have improved and water temperatures have reached 53 degrees at times. We have truely turned the corner on a nasty spring. We are […]
